Wales Outdoor Learning Week

Step outside, slow down, and reconnect with nature.
Spending time outdoors can have a powerful impact on children’s wellbeing.
Fresh air, movement, and moments of quiet observation help children feel calmer, more focused, and more connected to the world around them. Research shows that outdoor learning can improve children’s health, boost wellbeing and build self-esteem (Natural Resources Wales, 2025), while time spent in nature supports mindfulness, relaxation and positive mood (Mind, 2025).
To celebrate Wales Outdoor Learning Week (16–22 March 2026), we have created a free set of simple, flexible activities to help schools bring learning outdoors.
These resources are designed so that any school can take part. You don’t need woodland, large grounds or specialist equipment.
A playground, school field, nearby path, or small green space is enough to begin.
Because sometimes the most powerful learning happens simply by stepping outside.
What’s inside the resource pack?
Daily Walk Experience
A simple structure to encourage classes to step outside each day of the week.
Pupils are invited to:
• Notice what they see, hear, smell and feel
• Observe small details in nature
• Reflect on how their body and mind respond outdoors
• Build awareness and appreciation of the natural world
Teachers can choose the same route each day, or explore different outdoor spaces around the school.
Celebrate the learning
The resource pack includes ideas for creating a class or whole-school display, helping children share their observations and experiences from their daily walks.
This celebration encourages reflection and inspires other classes to explore outdoor learning too.
Mindful Movement Outdoors
A free sample of mindful movement activities designed to help pupils connect their body and mind while outdoors.
These gentle exercises encourage:
• calm breathing
• physical awareness
• emotional regulation
• mindful movement
