Terms and Conditions

Please read these Terms and Conditions carefully before entering the Jigsaw x Real Direction Competition. 

By registering interest in the competition and/or submitting a competition entry, the school confirms that it has read, understood and agrees to these Terms and Conditions. 

These Terms and Conditions apply to the Jigsaw x Real Direction Competition, run by Jigsaw Education Group in partnership with Real Direction.

 

1. Promoter

1.1 The promoter of the competition is Jigsaw Education Group (“Jigsaw”, “we”, “us” or “our”). 

1.2 The competition is delivered in partnership with Real Direction, who will support the masterclass content, judging process and production of the winning video. 

1.3 Jigsaw and Real Direction may be referred to together as the “Competition Partners”.

2. About the competition

2.1 The Jigsaw x Real Direction Competition gives eligible secondary schools the opportunity to submit an idea for a short educational video focused on a PSHE, safeguarding, wellbeing, relationships, online safety or young people’s lived-experience topic. 

2.2 The winning school will work with Jigsaw and Real Direction to develop and produce a short educational video based on the school’s submitted idea. 

2.3 The competition is intended to: 

  • give young people a voice in shaping educational content that matters to them; 
  • support schools with meaningful PSHE and safeguarding education; 
  • encourage student-led thinking around issues affecting young people; 

create a high-quality video resource that may support other young people and schools.

 

 

3. Eligibility

3.1 The competition is open to all secondary schools in England, Wales and Scotland. 

3.2 Entry is open to both current and non Jigsaw schools. 

3.3 Entries must be submitted by a member of school staff aged 18 or over, acting on behalf of the school. 

3.4 Students may contribute to the development of the entry, but the formal submission must be made by the lead teacher or another authorised member of school staff. 

3.5 The competition is open to students in Years 7–11. 

3.6 Each school may submit as many entries as they would like.  

3.7 Jigsaw and Real Direction reserve the right to reject entries that do not meet the eligibility requirements or that are incomplete, inappropriate, unsafe, unlawful or unsuitable for the aims of the competition.

 

 

4. Key dates

4.1 The competition timetable is expected to be as follows…. 

  • Competition opens: Week commencing 7 September 2026  
  • Competition entry deadline: Friday 6 November 2026 (entries must be received by this date)  
  • Judging period: Week commencing 9 November 2026  
  • Winner notified by: Friday 13 November 2026  
  • Filming of the winning video: January 2027 (exact date(s) to be agreed with the winning school) 

Register your interest, complete four filmmaking masterclasses to develop your idea, then submit your competition entry with a brief explanation of why your topic matters to your school. 

4.2 Jigsaw and Real Direction may amend the timetable where reasonably necessary, including where changes are required due to school availability, production requirements, safeguarding considerations, guest availability, technical issues or circumstances outside the Competition Partners’ reasonable control. 

4.3 Any significant changes to dates will be communicated to registered schools as soon as reasonably possible.

 

 

5. How to enter

5.1 The competition will take place in two main stages: 

Stage 1: Register your interest 

5.2 Schools must complete the registration form to access the masterclass content. 

5.3 Registration does not constitute a final competition entry. 

5.4 Schools that register will receive access to a masterclass landing page containing 4 Masterclass videos and guidance to support the development of their final submission. 

Stage 2: Submit your video idea 

5.5 To enter the competition, schools must complete the final submission form by the stated deadline. 

5.6 Schools may submit their video proposal in one of the following formats: 

  • written submission; 
  • audio submission; 
  • video submission. 

5.7 Entries received after the closing date may not be accepted. 

5.8 Jigsaw and Real Direction are not responsible for entries that are lost, delayed, incomplete, corrupted, misdirected or not received due to technical, network, platform or other issues.

 

 

6. Entry requirements

6.1 Entries must be original to the submitting school and must not knowingly infringe the rights of any third party. 

6.2 Entries must be suitable for use in an educational context. 

6.3 Entries must not include: 

  • personal or identifiable information about individual pupils, unless this has been specifically requested and appropriate consent has been obtained; 
  • confidential safeguarding disclosures; 
  • details of live safeguarding concerns; 
  • graphic descriptions of harm, abuse, violence or exploitation; 
  • defamatory, discriminatory, offensive or unlawful content; 
  • copyrighted material owned by someone else, unless permission has been obtained; 
  • music, images, video clips, logos or other assets for which the school does not have the necessary rights or permissions. 

6.4 Schools must ensure that student involvement in developing the proposal is appropriate, safe and supervised. 

6.5 Schools should avoid submitting sensitive personal information about pupils. Where a topic is based on real-life experience, it must be anonymised and handled with appropriate care. 

6.6 If a submission raises a safeguarding concern, Jigsaw and/or Real Direction may contact the lead teacher and/or take appropriate action in line with safeguarding responsibilities.

 

 

7. School commitments

7.1 By submitting an entry, the school confirms that, if selected as the winner, it is willing and able to participate in the production process. 

7.2 The winning school will need to confirm that: 

  • it has senior leadership approval to participate; 
  • it can make the required number of filming days available; 
  • it can provide suitable filming spaces; 
  • it can provide staff support during filming; 
  • it can support the consent process for participating students; 
  • it can comply with safeguarding requirements; 
  • it can work with Jigsaw and Real Direction during production planning; 
  • it can support reasonable communications and promotional activity connected with the competition. 

7.3 The number of full filming days required from the winning school will be 2 full days. To be agreed with the school in advance. 

7.4 If the winning school is unable to meet the practical requirements, Jigsaw and Real Direction reserve the right to select an alternative winning school.

 

 

8. Consent, safeguarding and student participation 

8.1 The safety and wellbeing of students is central to the competition. 

8.2 Schools remain responsible for the safeguarding of their pupils throughout their participation in the competition. 

8.3 Any student participation must be supervised by appropriate school staff. 

8.4 Before filming takes place, the winning school must obtain written parent/carer consent for all participating students using the agreed consent process. 

8.5 Consent must cover, as appropriate: 

  • student participation in filming; 
  • recording of image, voice and performance; 
  • use of footage in the final video; 
  • use of behind-the-scenes footage or photographs, where applicable; 
  • use of clips or stills for promotional purposes; 
  • sharing of the final video and related content by Jigsaw, Real Direction and the school; 
  • duration and scope of use. 

8.6 Jigsaw to share media release form with the winning school in advance of the filming.  

8.7 Students who do not have appropriate consent must not be filmed or included in any identifiable way. 

8.8 Schools must tell Jigsaw and Real Direction in advance about any relevant safeguarding, access, medical, SEND or wellbeing considerations that may affect a student’s participation, where appropriate and lawful to do so. 

8.9 The final video topic and production approach must be suitable for young people and must be handled in a way that is age-appropriate, sensitive and safe.

 

 

9. Data protection and privacy

9.1 Jigsaw will collect and process personal data provided through the registration and submission forms for the purpose of administering the competition, communicating with entrants, providing access to masterclass content, judging entries, contacting the winning school and managing follow-up activity. 

9.2 Schools must not include personal or identifiable pupil information in the registration or submission forms unless specifically requested and appropriate consent has been obtained. 

9.3 Jigsaw may share relevant school and submission information with Real Direction only where necessary to administer the competition, judge entries, provide content access, support production planning, offer free Real Direction content (accessible via their platform) or deliver the prize. 

9.5 Jigsaw and Real Direction will not share competition data with other third parties unless required by law, necessary for delivery of the competition, or clearly communicated to entrants. 

9.6 Personal data will be stored securely and retained only for as long as necessary for the purposes of the competition, follow-up activity, legal compliance and legitimate business record keeping. 

9.7 Where schools opt in to receive marketing communications from Jigsaw, Jigsaw may use the lead teacher’s contact details to send relevant updates, resources and information. Schools can unsubscribe at any time. 

9.8 Marketing consent is optional and is not required to enter the competition.

10. The prize

10.1 One winning school will receive the opportunity to work with Jigsaw and Real Direction to develop and produce a short educational video based on the school’s submitted idea. 

10.2 The prize includes: 

  • production planning support; 
  • creative development of the winning idea; 
  • filming at the winning school, subject to confirmation; 
  • production and editing of the final video; 
  • involvement of participating students, where appropriate; 
  • a final video resource produced by Real Direction. 

10.3 The prize is non-transferable and there is no cash alternative. 

10.4 The prize cannot be exchanged for money, credit, other services or another prize. 

10.5 Jigsaw and Real Direction reserve the right to substitute the prize, or any part of it, with an alternative of equal or greater value if circumstances beyond their reasonable control make this necessary. 

10.6 The winning school may be required to take part in reasonable publicity connected with the competition, subject to consent and safeguarding requirements. 

10.7 The prize must be taken within the agreed production timeframe. If the winning school is unable to participate within that timeframe, Jigsaw and Real Direction may select an alternative winner.

 

 

11. Complimentary resource for entrants

11.1 Entrant schools may be offered complimentary access to Love Is Blind, a short film by Real Direction, as a thank you for completing the competition submission. This is delivered via Real Directions online platform. Schools will be set up with access.  

11.2 Love Is Blind is designed for use in PSHE lessons, assemblies and pastoral sessions and comes with a facilitator discussion guide. 

11.3 Complimentary access to Love Is Blind is not part of the competition prize and does not affect the judging process.

 

 

12. Judging

12.1 Entries will be judged by a panel appointed by Jigsaw and Real Direction. 

12.2 Entries will be assessed against agreed judging criteria, which may include: 

  • relevance of the topic to young people; 
  • clarity of the idea; 
  • strength of rationale; 
  • potential impact on the school community; 
  • potential benefit to other young people; 
  • student voice and authenticity; 
  • suitability for educational use; 
  • suitability for video production; 
  • feasibility within the production schedule; 
  • safeguarding suitability and sensitivity of the topic. 

12.3 The additional school priorities questions included in the submission form will not form part of the judging criteria. They are included to help Jigsaw and Real Direction better understand school needs and priorities. 

12.4 The judges’ decision is final. 

12.5 No correspondence will be entered into regarding the judges’ decision, except where Jigsaw or Real Direction chooses to provide feedback at its discretion. 

12.6 Jigsaw and Real Direction reserve the right not to award the prize if, in their reasonable opinion, no suitable entries are received.

 

 

13. Winner notification and announcement

13.1 The winning school will be contacted using the lead teacher contact details provided in the submission form. 

13.2 The winning school must respond within 10 working days of notification.  

13.3 If the winning school does not respond within the required timeframe, cannot be contacted, is unable to meet the competition requirements or cannot provide the necessary approvals and consents, Jigsaw and Real Direction reserve the right to select an alternative winner. 

13.4 The winner may be announced publicly through Jigsaw, Real Direction and/or school communications channels, subject to agreement and appropriate permissions. 

13.5 Public announcements may include the school name, broad location, winning topic and general description of the project. 

13.6 No individual student names or identifiable student information will be shared publicly without appropriate consent.

 

 

14. Intellectual property and use of entries

14.1 Schools retain ownership of their original ideas and submission materials, subject to the permissions granted in these Terms and Conditions. 

14.2 By submitting an entry, the school grants Jigsaw and Real Direction a non-exclusive, royalty-free permission to review, copy and share the entry internally for the purposes of administering, judging and delivering the competition. 

14.3 The winning school grants Jigsaw and Real Direction permission to develop the submitted idea into a final video resource. 

14.4 The final video may differ from the original submission as part of the creative development, safeguarding review, production and editing process. 

14.5 Ownership of the final video and copyright sits jointly with Real Direction, Jigsaw, jointly and the Competition Partners are able to use the produced video for their own business use.  

14.6 Usage rights for the final video, include: 

  • hosting on Jigsaw platforms; 
  • hosted on Real Direction platforms; 
  • shared with schools; 
  • used within Jigsaw PSHE materials; 
  • used in marketing and social media; 
  • used in training, webinars or events; 
  • edited into shorter clips; 
  • used internationally; 
  • used for a fixed period or in perpetuity. 

14.7 Schools must not submit content that infringes the intellectual property rights of any third party. 

14.8 Where students contribute ideas, words, scripts, artwork or other creative content, the school is responsible for ensuring appropriate permissions are in place for that contribution to be developed and used as part of the competition and final video.

 

 

15. Filming, content and editorial control 

15.1 Jigsaw and Real Direction will work with the winning school to develop the final video in a way that reflects the school’s original idea while ensuring the content is safe, age-appropriate, educationally suitable and practically achievable. 

15.2 Jigsaw and Real Direction will have final editorial control over the final video. 

15.3 The winning school may be invited to review aspects of the production, subject to the agreed production process. 

15.4 The winning school will have opportunity to comment on approval before the final video before publication. 

15.5 Jigsaw and Real Direction reserve the right to make changes to the topic, script, structure, cast, filming plan, editing approach or final content where necessary for safeguarding, legal, educational, production, quality or brand reasons. 

15.6 Jigsaw and Real Direction may decide not to publish or share the final video if they reasonably believe it is not suitable, safe, legally compliant or aligned with the aims of the competition.

 

 

16. Publicity and marketing

16.1 Jigsaw and Real Direction may promote the competition through their websites, social media channels, email communications, partner networks and other marketing channels. 

16.2 Participating schools may be invited to share competition information with their communities, where appropriate. 

16.3 The winning school may be invited to participate in reasonable publicity about the competition, including: 

  • announcement of the winning school; 
  • behind-the-scenes content; 
  • quotes from staff; 
  • photos or video clips from the production process; 
  • sharing of the final video; 
  • social media promotion; 
  • case study content. 

16.4 Any use of identifiable student images, voices, names or contributions in publicity will require appropriate consent. 

16.5 Schools must not publish behind-the-scenes content, filming details, student images or production material without prior agreement from Jigsaw and Real Direction.

 

 

17. Costs and expenses

17.1 There is no fee to enter the competition. 

17.2 Unless otherwise agreed in writing, schools are responsible for any internal costs associated with participation, including staff time, room use, supervision, student preparation and internal administration. 

17.3 Jigsaw and Real Direction will not be responsible for any costs incurred by schools in preparing or submitting an entry.

 

 

18. Accessibility and reasonable adjustments

18.1 Jigsaw and Real Direction want the competition to be accessible and inclusive. 

18.2 Jigsaw and Real Direction will consider reasonable adjustment requests in good faith, while taking into account production requirements, safeguarding considerations, timescales and available resources.

 

 

19. Withdrawal and disqualification

19.1 A school may withdraw from the competition at any time by contacting [email protected] 

19.2 Jigsaw and Real Direction reserve the right to disqualify a school where: 

  • the entry does not comply with these Terms and Conditions; 
  • eligibility requirements are not met; 
  • information provided is false, misleading or incomplete; 
  • necessary permissions or consents cannot be obtained; 
  • the school cannot meet the production requirements; 
  • the entry raises safeguarding, legal or reputational concerns; 
  • the school acts in a way that may bring Jigsaw, Real Direction or the competition into disrepute; 
  • the school breaches confidentiality or publishes unauthorised production content. 

19.3 If a school is disqualified after being selected as the winner, Jigsaw and Real Direction may select an alternative winner.

 

 

20. Changes, cancellation or suspension 

20.1 Jigsaw and Real Direction reserve the right to amend, suspend, cancel or withdraw the competition where it is necessary to do so for reasons outside their reasonable control or where continuing would be unfair, unsafe, unlawful, impractical or inappropriate. 

20.2 Reasons may include but are not limited to: 

  • insufficient suitable entries; 
  • technical failure; 
  • safeguarding concerns; 
  • legal or regulatory issues; 
  • illness; 
  • school closure; 
  • production constraints; 
  • withdrawal of key partners; 
  • force majeure events; 
  • changes in availability; 
  • circumstances that affect the safe or fair running of the competition. 

20.3 Jigsaw will make reasonable efforts to communicate any significant changes to registered schools.

 

 

21.  Complaints

21.1 Any questions or concerns about the competition should be directed to [email protected] 

21.2 Jigsaw will aim to acknowledge complaints within 10 working days and respond within a reasonable period. 

21.3 Complaints relating to judging outcomes will be reviewed only where there is evidence that these Terms and Conditions have not been followed.

 

 

22. Confirmation by entering

By registering for the competition and/or submitting a final entry, the school confirms that: 

  • it has read and understood these Terms and Conditions; 
  • it meets the eligibility requirements; 
  • it has authority to enter on behalf of the school; 
  • it has senior leadership approval to participate; 
  • the entry does not include personal or identifiable pupil information unless appropriate consent has been obtained; 
  • it can meet the practical requirements if selected as the winner; 
  • it will obtain all required consents before filming; 
  • it agrees to Jigsaw and Real Direction processing relevant information for the purposes of administering and delivering the competition.
