This is a treasure map of reading opportunities outdoors, suggesting different places outdoors to explore, experiment and experience with our reading.

The Reading Map includes a fun activity of helping Jerrie Cat to find the colours of nature.

Launch Assembly

Assembly gathers all children together indoors, shares the aim and focus of the WBD theme about taking reading outside.

Jerrie Cat leads the Jigsaw friends outside to enjoy the new spring season…. for a whole school mindful movement, finding a space that makes you feel comfortable; experiencing freedom and choice practising mindfulness. Includes the 5 senses of the outdoors and mindful sounds in the outdoors i.e. bird song, rain drop, wind, thunder etc.

Mindful Movement

A sample set (total of 8 cards) 4 from KS1 and 4 from KS2. These aim to help children to be in a calm mindset, ready to read – practising exercise and movement in the outdoors.

The Mindful Movement cards could be used at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of the session. Movement cards include stretches and poses from a range of outdoor foci i.e. animals, wildlife, nature.

Collector Card - Bookmark

The Collector Card can be used as a tool to help to ‘collect’ different spaces to read in, in the outdoors – encouraging reading regularly both inside and outside of school.

The card gives everyone an opportunity to reflect on how they think and feel when they read outdoors.
