Staying Connected: Building a Culture of Suicide Prevention in Schools

Join our Jigsaw webinar 'Staying Connected: Building a Culture of Suicide Prevention in Schools', led by Alice Newton-Leeming, Jim Cumpson & Bethan Hall
The new DfE RSHE 2025 guidance offers schools a timely opportunity to reflect on how their PSHE provision supports young people’s mental health and wellbeing. This webinar explores what the updated guidance means in practice and how a well-delivered PSHE curriculum can play a meaningful role in building the protective factors that underpin suicide prevention in schools.
Designed for teachers, pastoral leads, PSHE leads and school leaders, this webinar takes a three-pronged approach to the topic. We begin by exploring what the latest research tells us about suicide prevention in young people, before looking at how structured PSHE programmes can provide a strong foundation for building resilience and connection. We then turn to the vital role charities and external organisations play in supporting schools, including the impactful work of Boys in Mind, and finish by considering how schools can respond effectively when situations arise — equipping staff with the confidence and tools to act.
Meet our speakers:
- Alice Newton-Leeming, Director of Mental Health Learning, has spent almost 15 years working and volunteering in mental health and suicide prevention. Having worked for Papyrus for eight years and supported those bereaved by suicide through Listening Ear, she now delivers training for YoungMinds, Mind and Every Life Matters, alongside running her own organisation, Mental Health Learning. Alice believes that mental health and suicide prevention are crucial responsibilities for us all.
- Jim Cumpson, CEO of Boys in Mind, has been part of the organisation since 2017 and brings over 20 years of experience in education. Boys in Mind works in partnership with schools and organisations to promote good mental health and prevent suicide, particularly among boys and young men, empowering young people to talk openly about their emotions and seek support.
- Bethan Hall, Programme Lead for Jigsaw’s 11–16 programme, will be sharing Jigsaw’s approach to suicide prevention in schools.
