In conversation with Dr Oscar Duke – The Hidden Cost of Connection: Smartphones, Screen Time and Childhood Health

Perfect for: Primary & Secondary PSHE Leads and class teachers
Watch our webinar 'The Hidden Cost of Connection: Smartphones, Screen Time and Childhood Health', led by Dr Oscar Duke & Becky Peckham
Smartphones have become woven into almost every part of childhood, connecting children to friends, learning and entertainment in ways no generation before has experienced. But this constant connection brings risks and impacts that aren’t always visible in the classroom or at home.
In this session, we are delighted to be working with Dr Oscar Duke, GP and familiar face from BBC Morning Live, he will offer a medical lens on how smartphones and screen time affect children’s developing minds and bodies. Becky will be drawing on her experience as both a parent, teacher and PSHE lead, bringing a grounded, practical perspective on what this looks like day-to-day in schools and at home, and what teachers can realistically do to support children.
We’ll explore:
- Attention span and concentration
- Sleep disruption
- Behaviour and emotional regulation
- Disconnection and loneliness
- Peer pressure and social comparison
- Safeguarding risks, including exposure to pornography and sextortion
Together, Dr Duke and Becky will unpack the risks, explore the real impact on mental and physical health, and share practical, evidence-informed strategies teachers can use with confidence.
Who should attend: PSHE Leads, class teachers
